Throwback Thursday - Path To The Cure (18 Photos)
By: Pat | October 15, 2015
Path to the Cure is more than just a 5k, and if you have ever volunteered or participated in this event, you truly understand that it is more than just your typical 5k. Path to the Cure is a celebration of women in the local community and it is absolutely amazing to see the thousands of people line the streets of Downtown Huntington on P2C day!
Julie, Angie, and the hundreds of volunteers who put on this event do an amazing job. They work year round and put in a countless number of hours of work and planning into this event. It is such a great feeling to be a part of P2C, especially knowing that it is a homegrown event that has become the largest 5K ever in Huntington, WV, and one of the largest road races in the state of West Virginia. This race not only promotes fitness in the community, but actually brings the entire community together. With P2C, no one walks alone. Thousands walk in honor of a friend or family member who is a survivor or who is currently battling breast cancer, or in memory of a loved one they have lost. Watching all of the Survivors cross the finish line together is absolutely incredible!
We didn't want to make a big deal about it, but just a few weeks before the 2015 Path To The Cure event, one of Team TSR's own team members was diagnosed with cancer. I am not 100% sure if she wanted to be named or not, so I will refrain from using her name, but she is so strong and an inspiration to us all!
One week before the 2015 P2C event, I was coordinating Team TSR's "game plan" for race-day (Registration, pictures, results, etc.). I called my friend, who was just diagnosed with cancer and had surgery 2 weeks prior, to see how she was doing. She told me she was feeling good, so I decided to just ask if she wanted to help out with the P2C event. Not expecting her to say yes, she said YES, she would love to be a part of the event!
I called Julie Neal a few minutes afterwards to share with her what her event meant to Team TSR as a whole. We had a fantastic team who was willing to jump on board and help out leading up to the event and on race day.
Sorry for rambling on, but I wanted to share a more personal side of TSR! I also want to encourage others to share what P2C means to them or any other race that inspires you. Please use the comments section below to share your story and let your story inspire others!
