Great Teays 5K to benefit schools devastated by the flooding

By: Pat Riley

In the wake of the news of the flooding in West Virginia, Hurricane High School Cross Country Coach Eric Cooper, reached out to his team.

“When you see what happened and see what people have lost it definitely puts things in perspective. You realize how fortunate you are, and you instantly start to think of what you can do to help. “ Cooper talking about the thought process his athletes went through while deciding what to do to help others.

The Great Teays 5k has traditionally been a fundraiser for the Hurricane High Cross Country team, but this year, the team decided to donate the proceeds from the race to the schools that were hit with the flood.

Once the idea of sharing the proceeds from the race with other schools in the flooded region was tossed around, they were all on board and excited about being able to help in some way. The money from their race will go to help others who they will be competing against this fall.

“I really have a great group of kids with good hearts and it shows. We know the schools that lost everything have a long road ahead of them so we just want to help in any way we can. “ said Cooper.

Hurricane High School is in a region of West Virginia that only received minor damage from the storm that blew through and flooded many areas of the state.

The 2016 Great Teays 5K will be held on July 23, 2016 at the Hurricane Wave Pool Park in Hurricane, WV. You can find more information at: https://tristateracer.com/event.php?RaceID=8516
